Welcome to Super Robot Wars R. The R stands for “Reversal”. It’s all about fixing the mistakes of the past.

What is this game?
Super Robot Wars R (SRW R) is a turn-based strategy RPG for the Gameboy Advance that came out only in Japan in 2002. It covers either Raul or Fiona Gureden as they and their team try to gather support for their new test robot, the Excellence, and its Time Flow Engine. Things spiral out of control from there.

Why do this?
Mostly because I really enjoyed doing the SRW D LP. I’ve already decided that I’m going to do at least one more LP after this one as well. I know this isn’t as good as a proper English translation patch, but this is the next best thing. I want current and future fans of my favorite series to understand these games and just what makes them so great. Just to be clear, my focus is primarily on bringing the story to an English reading audience.

What series are in this game?
There are quite a few series that are in this game and some of them even feature their own plots that intertwine together in interesting ways. Other series’ plots have already happened and they’re just sticking around to help or to help.

This will be my second screenshot LP, and I’ve already devised several improvements from my SRW D LP. Posts will be accompanied by the raw, unedited video footage of my gameplay, for better or for worse, and a link to a version of the same chapter in the test poster, which is for archival purposes. Do not expect perfect gameplay or playing animations for every attack. There will be other improvements such as naming everyone on their first appearance.

Barring any direct questions in the LP thread, I’m not going to go too in-depth into the game mechanics. The majority of them are the same as in other SRW titles, but I will point out the important and relevant aspects.

This game does feature route splits and unique units and scenarios depending on the decisions you make. It also has a lot of secrets to be found. I have a route in mind that I will ultimately take to the end, but I will be covering every stage for completionists sake.

Much like my run through SRW D, one of the Main Characters will be the “canon” route and the other will make appearances for the route splits that I don’t choose. Thankfully, there aren't that many differences between the two playable Main Characters, so for those making different decisions from my own, the majority of the time you’ll just need to swap between male and female references. I’m not planning on playing the game four times for every possible combination.

First thing’s first, we need to select our protagonist.


Our male choice is Raul Gureden and the female is Fiona Gureden. In terms of this game, they are the same person and an only child. It’s only in the OG games where they’re siblings.

The “canon” timeline for this LP will be Raul’s story. Fiona will appear in the route splits I don’t take. The vast majority of their dialogues are the same, so if you see Raul’s face in a combined route stage without a quote that includes Fiona, assume that they’re saying the same thing. Though don’t expect to see this much outside of stages that focus on the OG plot.


Here we can verify the MC’s name as well as the name of their mecha. I’m keeping the default, which is the Excellence. We’ll be seeing how that one looks and works soon enough.


Now we can name the MC’s two friends. The male is Raji Montoya. The female is Mizuho Saiki.


Sticking with default names for both timelines of course. Let’s get this show on the road.


A century has passed since humanity bilt multipurpose habitats, space colonies, and begane relocating there.

The conflict between those living on Earth and those living in space gave rise to numerous battles. Eventually the space colony Side 3, calling itself the Principality of Zeon, launched a war of independence against the Earth Federation.

This war, which would later be known as the One Year War, marked the beginning of a conflict between Eartnoids and Spacenoids. As a result, the Earth and the colonies suffered heavy blows and the global environment changed drastically.

The people, exhausted by endless conflict, established a unified Earth Sphere nation baked on the principle of complete pacifism and, for the time being, the fighting between Earthlings came to an end.

However, as if waiting for the Earth Sphere to grow tired of fighting, various invaders appeared from within and without the Earth. The Earth Sphere Unified Nation, which was reducing its military forces based on a policy of total pacifism, was powerless to resist them. But Robots built in various research institutes rose up and fought back.

This incident led to criticism of how powerless pacifism is, and a coup d’etat broke out. The Earth Sphere Unified Nation was overthrown and the New Earth Federation government was established, led by Dekim Barton.

After that, the New Earth Federation wiped out the invaders. But they could not come to terms with Neo Zeon, led by Char Aznable, and war began once again…

The year is Space Century (SC) 141. Combat experiments of a new multipurpose mobile weapon were about to be carried out…

We’re counting on you, Raul. We’ve spent two years building that “Time Flow Engine” based on blueprints left by our parents. If we fail here, what will they say from the afterlife?
Something like “Sloppy!”. They’d be angry for sure. They were so stubborn…
But that’s not all. If we fail here, we’ll stop getting development grants and all of our research will be in danger of being lost forever.
I know that. That’s why we developed a humanoid mobile weapon powered by the Time Flow Engine.

You’ve done a perfect job. Now it’s all on me. If we fail, it’s my fault.
Please do your best. We worked really hard to create this “Time Flow Engine” based on blueprints our parents left behind.
I know. It’s been tough for both of us to get this far.

Mizuho is right. If we fail here, we’ll stop getting development grants and all of our research will be in danger of being lost forever.
That’s why we made the Time Flow Engine power a humanoid mobile weapon frame.

With the war continuing, it’s hard to get grants for technology that can’t be used for military purposes, so we had no choice.
Without funds, we can’t do research. It all depends on this actual test. I’m counting on you, Raul.

Chapter 1: Trial Weapon

The first mission is to defeat all enemies. They’re weak and they won’t deal much damage to the Excellence. You just need to hold out for reinforcements. But speaking of the Excellence…


[Excellence Cosmodriver Frame]
The Excellence is the main protagonist’s mech in this game. Its key feature is the ability to swap out frames depending on the situation. In gameplay terms, you would have to go into your battleship and swap there, but the option still exists.
The Cosmodriver frame meant for space combat. In space, it’s pretty good at medium-long range. Its best attack, Fairies, are range 3-7 and would be your bread and butter if it didn’t require 120 will to use. That’s not a problem in this map since you start there, but in the early game, maps end well before you get to that threshold. By the time you do get to 120 will consistently, there’s a better frame to use in space. Otherwise, the Cosmodriver frame is just average.
The Excellence can also eject from the frame and fight in its fighter form. This does grant a full HP and EN heal. The fighter form kinda sucks, so you should instead use it to rush to the nearest battleship and swap out for another frame.

Stick the Excellence on top of the base. If the enemy does hit, the terrain will heal you at the start of every turn. It’ll also provide EN regen every turn, so don’t be afraid to overuse the Fairies. If you’re really anxious about getting hurt, just use the spirit Focus (+30% hit and dodge chance).

After fending off these rogue AIs for a turn…

We’ve got some new units, but besides pointing them out, I think it’s best if I go over them in the next chapter.


To the west, we’ve got the Nadesico B and the Super Aestivalis. All Aestis in this game have the trait where they run out of energy super quickly, but if they’re close to a Nadesico battleship, they regain full EN at the start of every turn. They’re also speedy, fragile, and hold a barrier. The Nadesico is a battleship that, aside from that Aesti EN property, can fire massive gravity blasts for a lot of damage.


To the east, we’ve got the Ra Cailum, a Re-GZ, and a Jegan. The Ra Cailum is a standard battleship, slow but bulky. The Re-GZ is more powerful in its BWS form, but when destroyed or on demand, can purge its BWS and fight like a normal mobile suit. The Jegan is a bog-standard mobile suit with no frills.


Defeat all remaining enemies. You could really do this in your sleep.

Victory should come at no surprise. It’s only the first chapter after all.

Is there any special technology in the Excellence?
The frame itself is really well made, but it’s not that impressive technological-wise. The issue is in its engine.
The engine is special?
To be honest, I’m not sure. It lacks a fuel tank.
That’s ridiculous. An engine that doesn’t need fuel?
It’s not that strange. I heard that the Phase Transition Engine on the Nadesico and other ships takes in a vacuum and turns it into energy.
And that’s not all. The engine is still running and producing energy. When I saw it, it made me think of a perpetual motion machine.
Perpetual motion… It couldn’t be. That’s literally impossible.

I see. If what Raul says is true, then someone must have set this whole thing up. Are they after the Excellence and the Time Flow Engine?
It’s probably the engine. The Excellence is too weak to be considered unique technology.
…Are they interested in the original purpose of the engine?
Original purpose?
They never told Mizuho the reason why my father developed time particles… The particles control the flow of time and the energy supply system that uses them exists to create and power a specific thing.
What thing?

I want to go over the intermission screen real quick first. Going from top left down, the options are Unit Stats (shows the stats of mechs), Unit Modification (lets you spend money to upgrade mechs), Unit Replacement (lets you swap out frames on specific mechs), Save (save), Pilot Stats (shows the stats of pilots), Weapon Modification (lets you spend money to upgrade weapons), Map Preview (lets you see a preview of the next chapter’s map), Load (load), Pilot Change (lets you swap out pilots to mechs of the same series), Equip Parts (lets you equip parts onto mechs), and Next Scenario (go to the next map). No puzzles this time.

You can swap characters to other mechs within the same series universe. For example, you can put a pilot from a Universal Century Gundam show (Z/ZZ/CCA) into any mech from that same series, but not into a mobile suit from Endless Waltz or Gundam X. You can swap pilots between Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger mechs as well. It’s not useful at this moment, but it can make for some interesting combinations later.

I’m not going to spend money on this first intermission.

You’ve got seven minutes to play with them, but that itself isn’t a time limit for this stage. Make sure the Excellence is in the Cosmodriver frame before this stage since, ya know, it’s in space.

Let’s go over the new units.


[RGZ-01 Re-GZ]
As mentioned previously, this is a pretty good mobile suit. In its more powerful BWS form, it has a long ranged beam attack and great movement. You can then purge the BWS either manually or when its HP drops to 0 and get a full HP/EN refill. Then it can fight in its mobile suit form where it’s kinda average. Still better than the next one on the list.


[RGM-89 Jegan]
The Jegan is kinda boring. It’s bog standard with no frills. It can become a workhorse if you invest a lot of money into it, but there are much better targets for upgrades.


[Ra Cailum]
The quintessential battleship. It’s bulky, slow, powerful, but needs help hitting things later. You can put any unit into it to slowly regenerate HP and EN at the cost of 10 will. It lacks the defensive options that the Nadesico has, but it’s also not entirely reliant on EN for its attacks. Just make sure it doesn’t die, because that’s always a game over.

There’s also the Excellence Striker Frame, but I’ll be going over that on the Nadesico B’s route.

SECRET ALERT
Clear this map in under seven turns.

Basically, don’t fail in stopping Fifth Luna. It is possible to stop Fifth Luna while defeating all enemies. Instead, I usually just rush down to Fifth Luna. Move the maximum amount south every turn and focus on counter attacking. Make sure to clear the way for the Re-GZ since it has the most movement. The enemies at this stage in the game won’t give much exp or money, and any exp or kills that Amuro, Kayra, and Bright get won’t matter in a few more chapters.

The Hisago Plan?
You don’t know about it? It’s a research project to put Boson Jumps to practical use.
I was too busy developing the Excellence’s frames…but I thought Boson Jumping was already being used.
It’s not completely usable. The Boson Jumps that we currently use are incomplete. Right now we can only Jump through a medium called a Chulip.
Well, we use what we can. Of course research is still being done to make it more accessible.
In other words, you’re creating a huge transportation network by placing these “Chulip Stations” all over the place and connecting them with Boson Jump “routes”.
That’s a good analogy. Easy to understand.
It’s true that right now the only Boson Jump route is between Earth and Mars, but eventually we should be able to travel throughout the entire Solar System.
Amaterasu, where we’re going now, is a terminal colony on the Martian side. We can get there by Boson Jump, so it’s perfect.
But doesn't Boson Jumping have an effect on the human body?
Yes. In order to avoid that, we need to cover the ship’s hull with a high-power Distortion Field when jumping. Just think of it as a barrier.

Nadesico B Route Chapter 2: Martian Successors


They really did come in with the Nadesico.
The enemy mobile weapon should arrive here soon.

Let’s go over the new units first. No matter what frame you selected for the Excellence in the previous intermission, it will deploy in the Striker frame. So without further ado…


[Excellence Striker Frame]
The Striker Frame is meant for melee combat in gravity. It utterly sucks at space combat with that C space terrain, so it’s not advised to deploy it on those chapters. It’s down to preference if you want to use this over any of the other terrestrial Frames later as it’s not that bad at what it wants to do, which is to get in close and punch the enemy in the nose.


[Nadesico B]
This battleship is a giant EN black hole. Its two attacks use up more EN than it regenerates and its Distortion Field uses up even more EN every time it gets attacked. If you can upgrade its EN and give it EN related parts, it’ll be a powerhouse. But considering this game, it’s not playable for too long.


[Super Aestivalis]
The Aestivalises are in general small and quick machines that thrive off of dumping their EN into medium powered attacks and damage reducing barriers, and then regaining all their EN from being close to a Nadesico battleship. They’re decent at this role and serve as excellent battleship guards and support attackers and defenders. It helps that the Nadesico battleships are quite good at being in the front lines, so they can shine more.


[Aestivalis Custom]
In essence, the Aestivalis Custom is the same as the Super Aestivalis but with a slightly different loadout.


So this map is the introduction to indoor maps. Their main feature is the addition of impassable walls (you can still shoot through them though) and individual tiles that regen HP and EN per turn. Normally these maps require you to fight your way to the end where a boss is either waiting or will spawn in. The enemies in this map are weak, but if an Aesti gets damaged, don’t be afraid to put it in the Nadesico or sit on a recovery tile for a few turns. The Nadesico especially might want to sit on a recovery tile since it’s a giant EN hog.

Once you get to the end of this corridor and all the initial enemies are defeated…

[Black Serena (High Mobility and Aestivalis Custom)]
The apex of the Aestivalis series. When you can put some upgrades into the Black Serena, it’ll never get hit and be able to deal out decent damage. There’s also a chance of Akito Boson Jumping to avoid attacks once he hits the 120 will threshold. With the High Mobility armor, the Black Serena has three different forms, and therefore three different HP and EN pools. If you purge, you won’t be able to go into a more armored form, so watch out. Also it’ll only get the normal Aestivalis EN regen treatment when in it’s in its Aestivalis Custom stage.

Hokushin and his men all have barriers of their own, so your own damage will be reduced. When they get above 120 will, they’ll also start Boson Jumping to negate attacks heading at them, so don’t prolong this battle any longer than you need to.

And there’s some boss dialog too.

We’ve got new units!


[RX-93 Nu Gundam]
If not the best, then it’s in the top three mobile suits in this game. The only real downside is that it needs lots of EN for its Fin Funnels and it’s slightly weaker in close range. In a game without the HWS or Hi-Nu as upgrades, this mobile suit is king.


[RX-94 Mass Production Type Nu Gundam (INCOM)]
This is just the Nu Gundam but slightly weaker. It also has an optional INCOM pack, so that even non-Newtypes can use it. INCOMs can be used by anyone and cost less but are weaker. Fin Funnels are stronger but cost more and can only be used by Newtypes (or rather pilots with the NT skill that aren’t from Gundam X). Another endgame usable mobile suit, but in these early stages it’s locked to INCOMs.

If you don’t get the MP Nu Gundam, then Kayra would deploy in her regular Jegan. Two Jegans, yay.


Defeat all enemies. With the Nu and MP Nu Gundams, they’re a piece of cake. I opted to let them come to me while I hung around an asteroid field.

There’s some boss dialogs if you rush to where Gyunei and Quess are.

We may be surrounded but every single enemy is a weakling with the exception of Hokushin and his guards. And even then, the only difficulty from the guards comes from how hard they are to hit. Hokushin does have access to Boson Jumping when he gets above 120 will, but an Aim spirit disables that.

Everything into the Excellence’s weapons! I also tried to swap some units around, but everyone just goes back to their normal mechs for the actual stage. Maybe another time.

If you want to invest money into these CCA units, some of them do share upgrades with some other units later in the game, so it’s not like the money is entirely wasted. The Jegan (not Hathaway’s) shares with the Gundam Mk-III and the Ra Cailum’s upgrades go into the Freeden.

Last time, we started to head to Axis to stop Char from doing something very wicked. Also Gaizok were there too.

Welcome to Char’s Counterattack proper. Thankfully this stage doesn’t have a time limit like other game’s versions of the Axis Drop. To beat the stage, you either need to get the Ra Cailum onto the designated point or kill every last one of them. I opted for the latter purely for monetary reasons. Due to reasons you’ll see soon, the CCA characters cease to matter after this stage.

Between us and Axis are Char, Quess, Rezin, and Gyunei. The best way to fight each of these enemies is to get in close so they can’t use their funnels. But that would also prevent us from using our funnels/faeries. Don’t be afraid to use spirits for this fight. There are no enemy reinforcements.

Being a series finale stage, there’s quite a few boss dialogs.

So there’s someone else who’s getting in my way. Humanity must judge itself with its own hands and atone for its sins towards nature and the Earth. Why don’t you understand that!?

To get a new mobile suit later in the game, recreate the events of the movie by having Chan deal the finishing blow to Quess’ Alpha Azieru while Hathaway is still alive.


The Alpha Azieru has an I-Field, which reduces beam damage. When you go in for the kill, make sure to use the Re-GZ’s mobile suit’s beam saber for maximum effect.

As you can expect, I put every cent of my current money into the Excellence’s weaponry.

If you want to invest money into these Prince of Darkness units, some of them do share upgrades with some other units later in the game, so it’s not like the money is entirely wasted. All Nadesicos share their upgrades throughout time. Saburouta’s Aesti goes into Gai’s Aesti. Akito, Ryoko, Hikaru, and Izumi’s units’ upgrades are shared between the same pilots.

Last time, we started to head to Mars to stop the Martian Successors from doing something very wicked. Also Gaizok were there too.

They’re dropping Axis on Earth. The New Federation’s Londo Bell unit is pursuing them, but it’s unclear whether or not it can be stopped.
Char, you’re doing something unnecessary… The operation to assault the New Federation HQ using Boson Jumps will be postponed until the results of Char’s Axis Drop are known.
So what will we do?
If the Axis Drop is prevented, we will assault the New Federation HQ using Boson Jumps as planned. If not, we’ll switch our target to Side 3’s Sweetwater!
It will take some time to gather data on Sweetwater, but that is the safest option.
It’s not the New Federation or Neo Zeon that will create a new world order. It’s us, the Martian Successors!

Oh man, there’s a lot of new units to play with.


[Freeden]
The main battleship for this part of the game. It has hover movement so terrain and water won’t affect how far it can move most of the time. It does also have a long range cannon to help ping targets, and you’ll want to use this.


[GX-9900 Gundam X]
The GX itself is unimpressive most of the time. Its attacks are weak and its stats are average. Its usefulness comes from the fact that Garrod is a fantastic Oldtype pilot, and it has the Satellite Cannon. In SRW R, the Satellite Cannon can be used on any stage regardless of time of day, has a massive 1-9 range, and will deal massive damage. But it can only be used once every few turns and has a kinda high will requirement. The GX does get a more consistent finisher much later in the game though. One last thing. It can fly and by default it is, but its air ranking is only a B. Land him as soon as possible and keep flight just for movement.


[GW-9800 Gundam Airmaster]
The Airmaster is a fine transforming mobile suit. What’s funny is that his mobility and attacks stay the same between mobile suit and mobile armor forms, so the only reason to transform him is for the additional movement, since the MA form has less armor. Overall, it’s decent and plenty usable.


[GT-9600 Gundam Leopard]
The Leopard itself is a fine long ranged mobile suit, much like the Heavyarms you all know and love. The problem is with the pilot, Roybea. This game lacks the Hit & Away skill, which for a case like the Leopard, will cause him to fall behind the rest of the army if you’re on the move. He also lacks the Accel spirit, which makes catching up all the harder. If you want to use the Leopard, you’ll want to give him movement increasing parts or only use him on stages where you need to play more defensively.


[MSA-005 Methuss]
The Methuss will be your main healer for a long while. Fa is also a great support pilot with her big SP pool and access to Trust. Just don’t expect them to do great in combat.


[OZ-12SMS Taurus]
Unlike other SRW games, this Taurus doesn’t have a repair or resupply module. It’s less useful since it can no longer support units, but Noin herself is a great support pilot. I just wish her mech was better overall.

There’s also Amuro in a Re-GZ. Since this is Zeta-era Amuro, he’s not as stupidly broken as his CCA version. But he’s still one of the best pilots in this game. I’m also not sure if this Re-GZ shares upgrades with the pre-time travel version.

SECRET ALERT
You have from now until stage 22 to get Jamil/Freeden 20 kills. It’s really not that hard if you ping enemies who are about to die with its main cannon.


Your first priority is to regroup both sides, preferably in the forest between them. Then storm the base. The mobile armor enemies have MAP attacks, but their accuracy sucks. The main problem involves dealing with the units inside the base, since that terrain gives them increased armor, evasion, and HP/EN regen. Even so, the place was empty.

By the way, what can you tell us about your group? Who are you? The Excellence isn’t registered with any military. Uribatake says that it’s powered by something no one has ever seen before.

Nadesico B Route Chapter 5: Something like a “Fateful Decision”




Fiona, the Aestivalises can’t stray far from the Nadesico because of their energy supply.
I’m aware. The Aestis will protect the Nadesco and we’ll charge to reduce their numbers.
The Time Flow Engine’s output is at 91%. Looking good and stable.
No abnormalities with the Striker Frame.
Aestivalis team, intercept any approaching enemies.
Five minutes until the evacuation is complete.
Okay, only five minutes. Don’t let them get close to the Nadesico! Everyone, get pumped!
Becoming a shield to protect people… That’s a good way to die.

New unit time!


[Nadesico]
It’s just a weaker version of the Nadesico B and C from before the time travel. What the original Nadesico does have over the other two are ammo based Missiles.


[Aestivalis (Air/Artillery/0G Frames)]
Everyone’s Aesti are exactly the same except for a different head section, so I’m just going to show off their frames once each. Much like the Excellence, the Aestivalis has different Frames that act differently from each other. The Air Frame is used for close range atmospheric combat, being awful in space and also being very lightly armored. The Artillery Frame is used for long ranged atmospheric combat and it’s the most heavily armored, but it also sucks in space. The 0G frame is used for space combat and is somewhere in the middle between Air’s mobility and Artillery’s bulk. If you want to use a combo attack between the pilots, they all need to be either the Air or 0G Frame. And of course, don’t forget that they need to stick close to a Nadesico for maximum EN usage.


[Daitarn 3 (Along with Dai-fighter and Dai-tank)]
Daitarn is huge, bulky, and powerful. It’ll have problems hitting things later on in the game though. It can transform into the Daifighter for slightly higher mobility and movement, and the Daitank for more armor. The mobility difference won’t matter because the enemy will have a hard time not hitting this 120m tall monstrosity (almost 394 ft for those who can’t metric). Overall, it will more than carry its weight and just needs some investment into Armor and EN throughout the game.

Akito and Gai have combo attacks with each other, much like Ryoko, Hikaru, and Izumi. Full disclosure, I don’t normally use Aestivalis units in my SRW runs, but I will make an effort to at least use Akito and Gai more often.


Much like what the dialog dictated, the Nadesico cannot move for five turns. You could go with the MC’s idea to focus on attacking with the Excellence and Daitarn, but I opted to hang back and let them come to me. The Jovian Battas are hilariously weak, so they won’t be an issue. Their mid-class units have more bulk, but will also have a harder time hitting anyone who isn’t a battleship or Daitarn. Every Jovian enemy has a Distortion Field which reduces incoming damage, so be mindful of that.

Watch out for the Daitetsujin. It’s more powerful than everything else. Still shouldn’t be that much of a problem. If you play more defensively, you can also drain it of its EN, rendering it helpless and its barrier inactive.

Once five turns have passed…


All the refugees are aboard the ship.

Now you can freely move the Nadesico and by extension, the Aestis.

[Neo Getter-1, -2, and -3]
Always believe in the Getter. Neo Getter switches up the formula a little by having -1 be the land/power form, -2 being the air/speed form, and -3 being the water/defense form. Since Neo Getter doesn’t run off of Getter Rays, it lacks any sort of HP or EN regen. In the end it still has three pilots and three different forms depending on where you’re fighting and at higher wills it has a chance to negate attacks with Open Gett, so it remains solid with some investment into its EN.


There are three plans of action in this situation. You can run east with Neo Getter-2 to meet up with ally reinforcements in a few turns, you can plop yourself on a building with Neo Getter-1 and tough it out, or you can hide in the river with Neo Getter-3 to take almost no damage from attacks. I opted for the river option, mostly because Getter-3s almost never get their time to shine.

The Jovian Federation are the descendents of people from the early Space Century. Their demands were refused and were thus banished from the moon by the military. This fact was then erased from history.
After that, we discovered ancient ruins on Mars and obtained the technology hidden within.
Later, they attacked Earth to get revenge on the evil Earthlings who drove them away.
Why Gekiganger?
One of the exiles happened to have a box set of Gekiganger 3. They watched it during their sad exile. Over a hundred years, Gekiganger 3 became their emotional support, their way of life, and their god.
So everyone on Jupiter is a Gekiganger maniac…

Well, they stopped attacking Von Braun City at least. But we still gotta fight them. Von Braun is actually some very good terrain with HP and EN regen, so make your way there and hold the line on top of the city. It’ll help in case any stray hits land and will keep Daitarn’s ENs topped up for their big attacks.

If you’re playing as Fiona, she won’t sortie for this first part for some reason, but Genichiro will leave. If you’re playing as Raul, he will sortie for this part, but you’ll have to fight Genichiro. I’m including his battle quote with Akito and his defeat quote just to be safe.

Dendoh is very interesting. It runs off of giant AA batteries, so it cannot regain EN by any source except for going inside a battleship or by a specific unit we won’t get for a few chapters. Most of its big attacks are at close range, so get in close. Its finisher, the Final Attack (FA for short) uses up all of its remaining EN, but gains power depending on how much EN it eats. Dendoh also has another feature, but we’ll see that later.

Dendoh is way far to the north-east, so make sure to use Accel to get it to the fight ASAP. You’ll need to because something happens at the start of the next turn.

[Mazinger Z]
The Invincible Iron Castle is pretty good. Unlike in future games, there are no debuffs in this game so Mazinger Z lacks the niche he has in SRW D (this game came out first). Mazinger can tank hits like no one else can (besides probably Daitarn) and dish out damage in a variety of ranges.


[Great Mazinger]
It’s a good solid unit. Great even. It’s more offensively focused than Mazinger Z. The two Mazin Bros do have a few combo attacks with each other, but they’re not really worth using most of the time since it takes EN from both of them.


[Diana A]
Diana A is a healer much like the Methuss. It’s stronger in combat and has more bulk, but lacks the movement and mobility.


[Venus A]
Venus A is just like Diana A, but it cannot fly. It does sport slightly more defense. Realistically, your choice of healer(s) will come down to personal preferences.


[Boss Borot]
Boss Borot is a joke character that’s only really good at resupplying. If it dies, its repair cost is so miniscule that it doesn’t even matter. If you want to invest in and use Borot, you’re a stronger person than me.

Just as a note, despite being a resupply bot, Boss Borot cannot restore Dendoh’s EN. That won’t be possible for a few more chapters.


[Valkyrie]
It’s Vega on a motorcycle. Big Megazone vibes. She’s a great driver, so she probably won’t get hit by anything. But if she does, she’ll also probably die in one hit. The bike does come with hover movement, so you can move her over water. I like using the Valkyrie for the novelty of it, but it’s really not that bad. You won’t be able to use this unit while in space, by the way.

Another quick note, Great Mazinger and Venus A won’t join the squad after this map. And even though Great cannot move, he can still attack.

The Mycenaeans are attacking from the north in waves of increasingly stronger enemies. They’re still no match for THE BOYS. Also Great Mazinger starts the map at 10hp so make sure you don’t forget to heal him. Rendezvous with Team Mazinger and either push north or camp out on the Amusement Park’s excellent terrain.

Unrelated, but this is the stage where Jamil gets his 20 kill requirement for his secret later in the game.

Now we fight some Meganoids. They’re just as strong as when we fought them on Mars. More annoying than anything else. If you can get Neo Getter-3 down into the water, there’s almost nothing they can do to it. The Amusement Park is great terrain and gives HP/EN regen, so the best strategy would be to make sure the Meganoids don’t occupy it. Morphing Daitarn into Dai-tank gives him enough defense and HP regen that he’ll be topped up every turn.


The only enemy that’s any sort of challenge is Edwin himself, since he’s a boss. There’s no set strategy to use against him, so save SP for defensive spirits or just tank his damage and heal up. His HP pool might seem intimidating, but it’ll go down before you know it. I don’t think he moves, so you can try whittling him down from the safety of the Amusement Park with your long range units. Thankfully, he doesn’t retreat.

When I was a kid, I loved watching your magic tricks… It was different from watching stuff on TV. I and all the other kids in town looked forward to your visits.
