Episode 20: The Hardest Levels in the Game

Image

Here we are. We have only a few levels left before we reach the end of the river.

The devs chose this moment to deploy some true nonsense upon us. A few of these levels are the hardest in the game, albeit for different reasons.

Level 96. COUSIN
Cousin Oscar usually sleeps in nothing!”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word C-O-U-S-I-N, in the proper order.
Image Remember the O-U in the word ”cousin”!

Thanks, mnemonic.

The main point of contention here is some potential tricky maneuverings with the zebras, but apart from that, this level’s not too bad.

Image
Image
Image

We start by grabbing the two apples we can get to, and the C. The stone wall protects us from the fire demon.

Image
Image
Image

The next step is to move the upper zebra to block the dart demon, but it takes two apples and I wander into the line of fire in doing so.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

The second time, we move the zebra first, to avoid wasting time if it ends badly. We make it, though.

Image
Image

Our first moves after moving the zebra are to grab the apple by the O (we’ll need it in just a bit), and push the boulder so it’s in position to let us cross the river.

Image
Image

After that, we backtrack to the C, then retrace our steps to grab the O.

Image
Image

The boulder lets us cross the river. With our remaining apple, I try to move the lower zebra into the path of the same dart demon - but end up half a square too low. We aren’t able to get the U like this!

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

This time, we get the zebra far enough up that we can slip in behind it.

Image
Image

We add the U to our pocket, then use the boulder on this side of the river to cross back.

Image
Image

The apple we picked up by the U gets used to feed the elephant, leaving the way to the S clear. And we can freely pick up the I.

Image
Image
Image

The fire demon prevents us from taking the short way around to the N, so we have to follow behind the rhino, instead. The devs thoughtfully gave us an apple to bribe it, but we don’t need it - after waiting for it to run upwards, we slip out from the nook that had the apple and quickly sprint down to get the N.

Image Back to the raft!

Image

This level is really just a test of your zebra-handling skills. If you have that down, it’s easy.

Image

JOURNEY is from all the way back in Level 6! And SUPPOSE is from the last level we finished. The game’s throwing everything it’s got at us in the pop quizzes now. We also have BICYCLE (Level 68) to spell... but on the other hand, the game also asked us to spell ROOF twice. Go figure!

Level 97. LOOSE
”My goose got loose and chased a moose.”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word L-O-O-S-E, in the proper order.
Image Remember the two Os!

This level’s honestly kind of fun. It’s not as hazardous as some levels have been, as long as you keep an eye on the alligator.

Image
Image

We start by getting the bridge, the L, and the apple by the lake.

Image
Image

We have to pick one of the two O’s next, and end up heading for the top one. To that end, we walk across the bridge of hippos and ride the final one across the river. This also gives us a second bridge.

Image

We have to push the boulder to get out of the nook with the E, which lets the gazelle loose.

Image
Image

After dodging the rhino, we lay down the bridge at the lowest point of the river so we can get the other O. However, we need an apple to be able to get it.

Image

The only apple we can reach is on the center island, and I lay down the bridge in the wrong place.
We restart.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

This time, after grabbing apple, bridge, and L, we head over to the left to get the other O.

Image
Image
Image

We lure the zebra down to the lower gap, walk back across the bridge, then recross on hippo-back to get the O (and a replacement apple).

Image
Image

Now we ride the hippo and grab the second O, before leaving walking past the E.

Image
Image

This time, we deploy the second bridge on this side of the island once the alligator has gone past. This lets us grab the last apple (though we don’t really need it) and the S.

Image

To finish, we just walk to the E.

Image Back to the raft!

Image

Clearing the puzzle helpfully clears away the hippos, letting us proceed upriver. This is the last puzzle with a hippo or an alligator in it. Another milestone!
It’s also the last puzzle with a gazelle, but that’s less interesting.

Image

Today’s quiz has GUESS (Level 53) and QUITE (Level 22), among other words.

Level 98. COUNTRY
”You can count every country if you try.”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word C-O-U-N-T-R-Y, in the proper order.
Image Remember the O-U in the word ”country”!

Oh, boy.

This level.

This McFreaking level.

This is the hardest level in the game, right here. The combination of rhino, tiger, dart demons, and pits with very narrow walkways create a level where it is easy to screw up and hard to get to the finish.

It will take us numerous tries to get there. Let’s get started, shall we?

Image

Our first task is to get the C. We have to walk around the upper right of the level to get there, and we have two choices of path: the narrow walkway, or around the grassy belt at the bottom right. Of the two, the walkway is far more dangerous, as we will have to dodge the middle dart demon’s shots without falling off.

Either way, we have to stay on the grass for this first part, to keep the tiger at bay.

Image
Image

We pick the walkway. This time, we make it.

Image
Image

Once we’re safely away from the edge, we run past the upper dart demon and grab the bridge. Our next move is to go get the C (done carefully - we could absolutely fall in here).

Image
Image
Image

After some thought, we bait the tiger into the grassy nook, and push the boulders to block the two dart demons.

Image
Image

The next step is to get the O, but in the way back, I fall into a pit.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 1

Image
Image

This time, we bait the tiger into following us, so we can trap it in the smaller nook to the right.

Image

We avoid getting shot by the dart demons by using the rhino as a mobile cover.
Put a pin in this. We’re going to be doing it kind of a lot.

Image
Image

After getting the C, we push the upper boulder to block the upper dart demon. We now have everything we need to get the O... almost.

Image
Image

We push the lower boulder down and over, blocking the line of fire between the lowest dart demon and the O. This will let us grab the O without getting sniped.

Image
Image

We pick up the O. This also attracts the attention of the tiger, so we spend some time painstakingly baiting it over to this nook. This’ll keep us safe when we get the N later.

Image
Image

We could probably keep the tiger where it is by walking right on the lower grass strip, but we opt to use the walkway again - and make it again.

Image

It’s only once I get to the top of the level that I realize the problem: we only have one bridge.

We have to cross the river twice to get both the U and the R, so one river crossing will have to be done with a boulder, running across and back. It can’t be the R because there’s a pit next to the riverbank, so there’d be nowhere to push the boulder from. So we have to use the upper boulder to get the U.

Only one problem: I pushed the upper boulder down, to block the top dart demon. If I try and push it back up, I’ll get shot.

I ponder for a bit, and decide we should restart.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 2

Image

In my next attempt, I walk incautiously too far to the right, and am bitten by a tiger.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 3

Image

This time, after walking on the grass, we carefully decoy the tiger into the right nook again.

Image
Image

From there, we proceed up, grab the boulder and the C...

Image

And after pushing the upper boulder to the left, we leave it where it is.

Image

To get past the upper dart demon, we run in time with the rhino instead.

Image

Once we get to the lower boulder, we push it down in time with the rhino as well (this isn’t strictly necessary, though, as the boulder is far enough away to be safe.)

Image

However, I accidentally push the boulder down onto the wrong side of the O. That’s a restart.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 4

Image

The next time, while baiting the tiger, I let it get a little too close.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 5

Image

And the time after that.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 6

Image
Image

On the next attempt, we come up with a safer way of baiting the tiger, involving moving horizontally on the grass path above it.

Image
Image
Image

We get the C and the bridge, push the upper boulder over, the lower boulder down, and get the O.

Image
Image
Image

After luring the tiger back, we head around to the upper side of the area. It’s time for us to make our first attempt at the U.

Image
Image

We push the boulder up, then over, running across and then back immediately once we have the letter. We have just enough time to do this before the boulder sinks.

Image

To save time, I decide to head back down on the near side of the level. I’m so accustomed to the rhino turning around where the boulder was that I anticipate it doing so even when the boulder isn’t there. It does not, and we get sniped.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 7

Image

This time, we get the C and O in the approved manner, but opt to leave the tiger where it is.

Image

However, this attempted innovation doesn’t have a chance to pan out, as I accidentally push the upper boulder into the river in the wrong place. We restart.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 8

Image

The next time, we push the upper boulder up immediately after getting the C. There’ll be no accidents, this time!

Image
Image

We do repeat the maneuver we did last time with the tiger, walking around it to get to the upper area.

Image
Image

We grab the U safely, too. Now our next job is to make a try for the N without getting bitten.

Image
Image

Heading downwards by running with the rhino, we pick the safe route of bringing the tiger over to the left.

Image

From there, picking up the N is as simple as walking over and taking it.

Image

There are two ways to get up to the T. Going left and up requires precise control over our movement or risks us falling into the pit. Going right and around is the long way.

We take the long way.

Image
Image

It does get us the T, though.

Image

I’m... not honestly sure why I didn’t just walk all the way down here. The grass would have protected me from the tiger. Maybe I was intimidated by it?

Anyway, we got shot, so it’s restart time.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 9

Image

In the next attempt, I make a mistake while wrangling the tiger.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 10

Image
Image

During the next attempt, everything proceeds normally to start.

Image
Image

After getting the O, we deploy the bridge right away. This way, we won’t have to do it later.

Image
Image

Once we move the tiger back left, getting the U is the next step. We make it in time!

Image

And from there, we walk down and take the N.

Image
Image
Image

We take the long way around again to get the T.

Image
Image

With the bridge already deployed, we can walk down and around on the grass to go over and get it. The bridge entrance has its own ‘safe zone’, so we’re not worried about the rhino.

Image
Image

We’re almost there. We just need the Y. We walk around and up...

Image

...and just as we’re about to get the Y, we fall into the pit.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 11

Image

In the next attempt, I forget about using the rhino as cover and get hit by a dart.

Image Let’s try that one again!
Retry Counter: 12

Image
Image

On our next attempt, things start smoothly as we move the tiger and get the C.

Image

We get the O and lead the tiger over at the same time.

Image

In a time-saving precision move, we head back up via the left walkways, drawing in the tiger while avoiding getting sniped thanks to the rhino’s position.

Image

We get the U without much trouble either....

Image
Image

...before retracing our steps and walking over to the N.

Image
Image

We take the same left-side shortcut to get the T, and make it.

Image
Image

After waiting for the rhino to leave, our next move is to deploy the bridge and get the R. We’re almost there... again.

Image
Image

Is this attempt gonna be the one?

Image

Made it.

Image Back to the raft!

Image

We still have to be careful on our way back to the raft. Falling in a pit will still force a restart, all letters collected or not.

Image

It took 13 tries, but we got there in the end.

Normally levels take about 5-10 minutes to record. This one took 25.

Image

The game does an irony by tossing the first level’s word, FIRST, at us in this pop quiz. AFRAID (Level 21), BICYCLE (Level 68), and PEOPLE (Level 93) all show up too.

Level 99. LIGHT
”You might need light to read at night.”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word L-I-G-H-T, in the proper order.
Image You will find the spelling in the sentence at the bottom!

This level looks less hard than COUNTRY, certainly, but there’s a specific pain point that means we’ll need to exploit a bug to beat it.

Image

Our first task is to get the L. The way this level is designed, we’ll have to go through the entire level to get it, then backtrack to get the other letters.

We start by hugging the near wall to stay out of range of the fire demons, and pushing the boulder to get across to the next segment.

Image
Image

In this section, we walk around the lower boulder to dodge the rhino, then push the upper boulder to continue across the river.

Image
Image

We can’t do much with this next room until we’re on the way back, so we just grab a bridge, push the boulder, and leave.

Image

That brings us to this room - the last one before we can get the L. And it’s the puzzle’s primary pain point.

Let’s break it down before we continue.

Image
Image

The intended solution for how to pass this on the way down is to walk up and around the boulder, and push it to the right, as far as it will go without going in the river. This will draw the lion’s attention, but it should be possible to outrun him. Then, once the boulder is pushed, we’re supposed to wait for the rhino to get right up next to the lion, and throw an apple at it from afar. This will block the lion and let us grab the other apple and run past.

I only figured this solution out midway through the level, and this is not what we will actually do to beat it.

Image

My first impulse is actually to try to block the lion with the boulder, but it doesn’t work - the lion comes out of its nook as it sees us nearby.

Image
Image

Further experimentation establishes the lion is tracking us if we’re even sort of close. Finally, I just make a run for it.

It doesn’t work.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

After we restart, we make our way back to the lion’s den.

Image

This time, I make a run for it without pushing the boulder.
It still doesn’t work.

Image

At this point... I consult the walkthrough on GameFaqs. It details, somewhat carefully, how to exploit a bug and stop the lion from chasing us.

The idea is this: if we walk far enough away from the lion, he will enter a ‘returning home’ state, and won’t pay attention to us until he’s back at his home space. However, with some good timing, it’s possible to arrange things so that the rhino walks into his home space instead - and if the lion is just about to reach it, it’ll block the rhino from leaving. Both animals will be stuck where they are and will not bother us.

Now we have to actually do it.

Image
Image

In our first attempt, I push the boulder to the right (ironically hinting at the puzzle's intended solution instead). When I get the lion to chase us, the boulder means we have to turn, and it catches up with us and bites us.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

This time, we push the boulder down instead. We now have a clear path to get the lion’s attention.

Image

We have a number of attempts where we run for it too early...

Image

...and then one where it chases us, but the rhino isn’t there to interfere when it heads back home.

Image

But we finally get the rhino and lion stuck in place!

Image

Both completely ignore us as we walk by, now.

Image

Placing the bridge we picked up, we get the L.

Before we continue, I want to note how many apples we have (three). If we were doing the intended solution, we’d have to use two of those apples to stop the rhino in place blocking the lion’s den. That would leave us with one apple to use to get past the elephant. Then, we’d have to dodge the rhino guarding the G on our own (in both directions), and use the apple by the G to freeze the rhino by the H in place. Then, we’d have to slip past the G rhino again, and use the last apple to feed the elephant.

As we’ll see shortly, it’s entirely possible to screw up under such conditions.

Image
Image

We proceed back up past the lion and the rhino (neither bothers us) before pushing the boulder to get back across the river.

Image
Image

After grabbing the I and the bridge, we feed the elephant and pass through to the far right side. We now have to carefully dodge the rhinos to get the G and H.

Image

We wait for the right time, and get the G and another apple.

Image
Image

And, we’re able to make it back into the gap in the wall before the rhino turns around.

Image

But I screw up the timing and get run over.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

This time around, we’re going to do something a little different - because I discovered the intended solution to the puzzle.

Image
Image

After pushing the boulder (admittedly, down instead of right), we wait for the rhino to turn around and throw an apple at it.

Image
Image

We push the boulder up and a bit right while the rhino is still eating.

Image

Somehow, the rhino ended up facing left-right instead of up-down - perhaps because we threw the apple from the right side. This’ll be a big help when we come back.

Image

We get the L (again).

Image
Image

When the rhino is blocking the lion, we throw another apple, and push the boulder to the river unbothered.

Of course, doing it this way, we have only one apple left.

Image

We use the apple on the elephant, after grabbing the bridge and the I.

Image
Image

And like before, we dodge the upper rhino to get the G and one apple.

Image
Image
Image

With our newly obtained apple, we feed the lower rhino, and slip in and grab the H.

Image

On the way back, I instinctively use our one remaining apple to feed the rhino and make room - and now we have no way to pass the elephant.

We restart. I decide the intended solution is for the birds.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image
Image

Upon reviving, we make our way back to the top of the level.

Image
Image

After pushing the boulder down, we manage to get the lion and rhino stuck behind each other once again.

Image
Image

This lets us get the L with no trouble.

Image
Image

Heading to the right side, we get ready to run past the elephant. We have enough apples to give us some breathing room, this time.

Image

We’re able to run past the upper rhino to get the G...

Image

...dodge it on the way back...

Image
Image

...and feed the lower rhino to let us reach the H.

Image

By feeding the upper rhino, we’re able to get back out of its corridor - and we still have the toll for the elephant.

Image
Image

We use the other bridge to recross the river, and dodge around the last rhino for the T.

Image Back to the raft!

Image
Image

The boulder lets us cross the river one more time, and we make it onto the raft.

Image

What a ride. I honestly think the intended solution to that one was harder to discover than the bugged solution. No wonder the walkthrough had that solution instead.

Image

Our last pop quiz of the day has DOCTOR (Level 55), POISON (Level 49), and DECORATE (Level 57). And don’t forget, kids: Yobi says, ‘VOTE”!

Image

We’ve made it through some of the nastiest puzzles on the river. But one more level stands before us. And it’s the tenth and final trinket level, to boot!

It’ll only take one last push to make it through. See you there!

Next Time on Spelling Jungle: The river is flooding, and our home is in danger! What could be the cause?

Episode 21: The Big F-I-N-I-S-H

Image

This is it, folks! We just have to solve this one, last level (getting the trinket, of course), and then we can all go home.

Let’s get right to it.

Level 100. FINISH
Five insects nested in Sally’s hair.”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word F-I-N-I-S-H, in the proper order.
Image Remember, there is only one N!

It’s something of a potion final exam here on the river. We’ll need to use all three potions in the first half of the level. That’ll decide whether we succeed— or try again.

We begin.

Image
Image

We start by grabbing the Anti-Dart potion, then turning back around so we can cross the mud from the lower side. If we tried to cross in the middle and head down, we’d get flambéd.

Image

While under the potion’s influence, I fearlessly advance into a withering fire of darts... walk past the F... get stopped by the wind demon... and get shot as the potion runs out. Whoops!

(I think I was trying to get up to the boulder to push it down, but I didn’t think about the wind demon.)

Image Let’s try that one again!

Image
Image

This time, after some thinking, we run up into the dart demon area again - but with our potion fading, we duck down and grab the F.

Image
Image

Then, we push the boulder to block the lower dart demon. We can run up and dodge the left demon’s shots, letting us get back to the riverbank safely.

Image
Image
Image

Grabbing the Anti-Fire potion (and dodging back around so we can slide across the mud in the middle), we run past the fire demons, pushing the upper boulder over to give us breathing room.

Image
Image

Now, we can push the other boulder down, and get the N. This helpfully blocks the left dart demon’s line of fire, letting us return to the bank safely.

Image

Now comes the tough part.

We need to grab the Anti-Wind potion, run up to the top (not on the mud or we’ll fall in a pit), cross the mud, not fall into the pit to the left on the other side, and finally run up and into the wind demon’s path to grab the trinket - then right and up to grab the second bridge.

All in the span of the almost-11 seconds given to us by the potion.

Image

We almost make it on our first attempt, navigating the route flawlessly. I only screw up in two places: on the second upward section, where we push against the wall for half a step, at the end, pushing into the wind a half step too far. This wastes a total of 24 frames, or three frame windows.

Image
Image

As a recap, each walking animation in Spelling Jungle takes 8 frames at 30 FPS. We can call these 8-frame segments frame windows, as the game only checks for input right before the start of a frame window. While a frame window is running, further input will not interrupt your movement.

In the GIF, I turned late and we spent one frame window pushing against the topmost stone wall. Then, when pushing against the wind, I corrected my movement too late as well, and we spent a second frame window moving a half-step too left, and a third moving back to where the trinket had been sitting.

Image

As a result of this, this is where we are at the exact moment our Anti-Wind potion runs out. If we’d had at least two of those three frame windows to use, we’d be half a square to the right and half a square up, nestled in the gap in the stone wall, and thereby immune to the wind demon’s blast.

Or, to put it another way: to get the last trinket, the final puzzle requires us to be nearly frame-window perfect.
Frame-window perfect isn’t frame-perfect, admittedly, but this is as close as Spelling Jungle gets. Our margin for error is half a step - roughly 0.26 of a second. Any more than that, we have to start over.

Getting this trinket may take some time.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #3

Image

We get the F, I, and N without trouble.

Image
Image

However, we go a half-step too high as we head upwards, spending two frame windows there. We then waste another two frame windows pushing up against the stone wall above the trinket, and the wind demon blows us away without letting us get the second bridge.

We’re stuck.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #4

Image
Image

While we get the first three letters easily, this time we overshoot past the trinket, spending two frame windows, and get blown away right before we can grab the bridge.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #5

Image

This time, I try going up and getting the bridge first, before the trinket. I spend a frame window walking against the top edge of the level, and another pushing against the stone wall below the gap. If I hadn’t spent those, I think we could have made it.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #6

Image
Image
Image

This time, I go up half a step too far on the way up (2 frame windows), and also end up pushing against the top wall after grabbing the second bridge (1 frame window). We get stuck with the trinket just a square away.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #7

Image

This one goes perfectly... until I spend a frame window pushing against the lower stone wall in the windy corridor.

Incidentally, I calculated the routes later. It turns out that going to the left first, back, and then up has more wiggle room. If you go left first and waste (exactly) one frame window, you will be halfway in the gap in the stone wall when the potion wears off. This will let you finish safely. However, if you go up first and then left, if you wasted one frame window, you will get stuck half a square away from the trinket.

Sadly, I didn’t realize this for quite some time. We continue taking the route that requires perfection.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #8

Image

This time, I messed up on the run into the dart demon area and got shot after the potion wore off. Whoops!

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #9

Image

And this time, I got stuck in the mud and we didn’t even get a single bridge.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempts #10-14

The next five attempts all play out exactly the same way.

Image
Image

After getting the first three letters, we almost make it to the trinket, but I spend a frame window pressed down against the stone wall next to it.

ImageImageImageImageImage Let’s try that one again!

Attempts #15-17

Image

The three attempts after that are almost the same, but I end up losing that frame window pressed up against the top wall, instead of the bottom.

ImageImageImage Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #18

Image

And now for something completely different: when heading to the dart demon area, I misjudge our entry path. We slide on the mud and get barbecued.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #19

Image
Image

The next attempt is back to business as usual: I use up a frame window pressed against the top, and we’re stuck half a square away.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #20

Image

At this point, I get sufficiently fed up with this that I start practicing quick turnarounds.

Image
Image

Even with all that, though, we don’t make it - this time I hold ‘Down’ a smidge too long before turning to grab the trinket.

Image Let’s try that one again!

Attempt #21

Image

At this point, I was rapidly becoming fed up with the level. I did some more practice.

Image

This time, I undershot the bridge instead of overshooting. Once again, we are stuck.

This was at the end of a multi-hour recording session, and my patience (already somewhat frayed by COUNTRY) had reached its limit. I closed the game and went to bed.

Attempt #22

Image
Image

I picked the game up again the next day.

Image

Image F-I-N-I-S-H is the word.

Image
Image

We begin from the beginning, grabbing the Anti-Dart potion and running to get the F.

Image
Image

Running past the fire demons and getting the I goes smoothly.

Image

As does getting the N. Now it’s time for the moment of truth.

Image
Image
Image

Finally, after 22 attempts and a good night’s sleep: we made it.

Image
Image

With the bridges, we easily get the second I and the S.

Image
Image

And now we can walk past the dart demons and up to take the H.

Image Back to the raft!

Image

Phew. What a mess! A ridiculously timing-perfect trick to finish it out. At least we never have to do that again.

Image

One pop quiz later (featuring ENOUGH from Level 7 and COUSIN from Level 96), we head upriver, to find...

Level 101. SURPRISE
Sally understands rafting past rhinos is super easy!”

SURPRISE! There’s one more undocumented level before the finish.

However, things are about to get complicated.

Image
Image

In order to screenshot the map at 100 levels, I return to the map instead of solving this level right away.

Image
Image

And when I click ‘PLAY’ again...

Image

...we find ourselves back at the last level the game can save at. Level 100: FINISH.

And to make sure the trinket gets recorded properly, to be safe, we’ll need to do the level to completion all over again.

Level 100. FINISH
Five insects nested in Sally’s hair.”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word F-I-N-I-S-H, in the proper order.
Image Remember, there is only one N!

Thankfully, this time, it only takes us two attempts.

Image

The first attempt ends badly when I enter the mud at the wrong angle, surf down, and get us roasted.

Image
Image
Image

But the second attempt goes beautifully. Another perfect run.

Image
Image
Image

We grab the last three letters and get out.

Image Back to the raft!

Image

Now I genuinely do hope we never have to do this level again.

Image

There’s one last pop quiz before we’re free. This one has BOUGHT (Level 60), PRIVATE (Level 38), and BECAUSE (Level 88).

Fun fact: I still remember the mnemonic for PRIVATE, which is one of the levels that had a proper one. Real mnemonics work, folks.

Now, on to the final-final level.

Level 101. SURPRISE
Sally understands rafting past rhinos is super easy!”

Image

Image Collect the letters of the word S-U-R-P-R-I-S-E, in the proper order.
Image Remember, an S can sound like a Z!

This level looks interesting. Let’s do it! We walk off to the right from the raft...

Image

...and there we have it.

Image Back to the raft!

We even slide onto the raft automatically.

Image

Now, it’s time to see what lies at the end of the river—

Image

...after one super, duper, ultra, mega, omega final pop quiz. Everyone is here. From FIRST (Level 1), to WHOSE (Level 32), GUESS (Level 53), and even BUILT (Level 91), this game has something from the whole river for us to run through until we’re done.

Now it’s time to see what’s out there.

Image

The headwaters of the river: a waterfall at a cliff. We pull in in style.

Image Well! You finally made it.

Image

Then, we begin climbing the cliff.

Image The river is flooding, and our home is in danger! What could be the cause?

Image

Up we go...

Image You look like you know what you’re doing!

Image

...to discover a gigantic, running faucet.

Image Well! Someone left the faucet on.

:eyepop: I have questions, and I know there will be no answers. Why do we even have a giant faucet at the head of the river? Who left it on? Why didn’t we hear about this on the way?

We shall never know.

Image
Image

Inspecting the faucet, we turn the handle...

Image

...and the flow slows, then stops.

Image

We have triumphed.

Image You have done exceptionally well! You are a true speller; carry this knowledge with you and share your experiences, and perhaps— we shall meet again!

Image
Image

And that’s Spelling Jungle.

Conclusion

Here ends the Let's Play.

Oh man, I started this as a casual project in, like, September of 2020? And it's finally finished. Holy shit.

It was, I admit, a bit more work than I expected. If I LP Spelling Blizzard, it'll probably be some time from now, and get its own LP thread. But I'm proud to satisfy past me (at the school computer lab)'s determination to finish this game.

Thank you to everyone who followed along. And always remember to keep your faucets off when you're not using them - who knows what could happen? Image

Thank you all, and have a good night.
