Bustin' makes me feel - Let's Play MapleStory v251

Put your Let's Plays in here.

Back in our main timeline, Lucid is defeated at last.

Image I miss having that much power…

Image It was power that was already yours. You'll get it again someday, for sure.

Image Yeah, you're right. Anyways…

Image
Image Is it over? Is that it?

Image I... think it's over. But the barrier around the city isn't gone yet.

Image What are you going to do now?

Image Dreams and reality are separate once more. And now, just like any other, this dream will slowly fade away...

Image But if the dream ends, then you'll…

Image The nightmare's over. All of it. If the people, or the Erdas, are safe, I've fulfilled my purpose. I don't need to be here anymore.

Image

Image Once the fog's lifted, I assume you'll get back to your quest. It won't be easy for you, but I think you‘ll come out on top.

Image

Image So… that's it. Nothing to do but wait, huh?

Image Seems like it. Good job, Tear. You really saved the day this time.

Image I'd feel better about it if I was saving real people… but Erdas in the shape of people aren't that different, in the end.

Image

For our troubles, we got our hands on the Lachelein Arcane Symbol, which is a butterfly for obvious reasons. Using our Hyper Burning bonuses, we then also grab a level 5 one immediately and equip it. This'll put our AF back over where we want it to be for the next area.

Image

This also fills up our first full row of Symbols. The next row doesn't appear until we have access to a fourth to equip, but it'll pop up automatically. Our gear is coming along as well, though we need better "Everything but rings and a weapon." Even our outfit, while technically BIS gear, will need replacing. The clock stops for no one.

Image

While we do have the levels necessary to move on to the next area right now, though, I decide to stop. This is for a couple of reasons.

The first (and most important) is that for this and the next few updates I was busy playing in the morning after work before I went to bed. This meant I would frequently be playing until a fair bit of time after I was supposed to be in bed, so it was vitally important that I keep my playtime relatively short. It wasn't, of course, and I wound up finishing today's footage at around an hour after I should have gone to sleep, but in the end my wife didn't find out and as long as I don't do anything stupid like advertise the fact in a publicly available Let's Play forum no one will ever be the wiser.

Image Uh..?

What?

Image I think you should go to sleep at a reasonable hour!!

Anyways, reason number two—

Image Don't just ignore your health! Everyone, remember to play video games in moderation!

Image

We're going to talk some more about Lucid, because her place in the story is left unfinished by just Lachelein alone and we're skipping a bunch of bonus content that gives context to what she was actually trying to accomplish here. We've done enough Maple, it's time to talk Story!

So Lucid is an elf, and in MapleStory canon all elves were frozen as a direct result of the Black Mage's curse on Mercedes—queen of the elves and one of the ancient heroes. Unlike most elves, Lucid had a power over dreams that left her mind completely awake, and she wound up falling into despair over how alone she was over the next several hundred years. This lasted until she met the Black Mage (pictured above) by complete accident, touching consciousnesses in the dreamworld. The Black Mage promised her a whole new world, and she took his hand to break out of the ice and become one of his commanders.

This was all well and good, and she did some shenanigans with an alternate future dreamworld that was sent to people's dreams to give them insomnia—we would have done something about that, but we were busy being in a hat at the time. It's ok, Kaiser has our back or something.

Image Maybe Velderoth saved everyone this time?

Sure, let's go with that.

Image

Unfortunately, before the Black Mage's plans came to fruition, she asked him to show a glimpse of the new world they were working to make, and he thought that'd be just awesome, actually. So he showed her the world they were working towards.

She saw nothing.

The new world would have nothing at all. Not even the Mage himself.

Finding out that the Black Mage wished for his own nonexistence, Lucid decided to rebel. She set up shop in the Arcane River and made Lachelein as a city that would exist without sadness or pain, just people being eternally happy. Her goal was to party so hard that even the Black Mage would realize there was something better than nonexistence, and put an end to his plan to destroy everything forever.

Unfortunately for her, Lucid spread her powers too far and got trapped in her own dream. She could control almost anything there, but certain Nightmares were beyond her ability to control and she couldn't wake up anymore even if she wanted to. She resolved herself to change the Black Mage's mind once and for all and shroud the entire world in sweet dreams, at which point she would allow the nightmare to swallow her whole.

Then she got the shit kicked out of her by a magical girl idol flinging dragons around.

This knocks her further into her nightmare, and she will be spending the next while trying to contact the Black Mage. Once she does, she'll touch his memory and immediately get cut off from the guy forever, left completely alone in a prison of her own nightmares. This will go on until Protective Mask pulls her out of there, because that's what Protective Mask's there for.

Image

It is also revealed that Protective Mask was actually Dream Mercedes all along. After this, she's taken into custody by Mercedes and brought back to Elluel, the homeland of the Elves.

Image

Once you've viewed all of this plot, it's actually possible to see her inside a little prison bubble in Elluel if you feel like going to visit. She's sleeping there and while she's yet to wake up, while Queen Mercedes hopes that she has nice dreams this time.

And so ends the story of Lucid…

…Or it would, except this is the DREAMER update. See, Lucid's having a new dream.

Image

In it, she's brought back all of her friends from Lachelein and given them all a proper party atmosphere to deal with so that they can actually be happy this time. It's a fluffy event that's supposed to show that she's slowly recovering and maybe someday will wake back up again. Unlike before, nobody's trying to break out.

Image

Instead, they're all trying their best to make Lucid happy because they all know that they're dreams and ultimately ephemeral. They don't want Lucid to catch on to the fact that she's wound up in a dream again, and would really like the party to go on without a hitch until it winds down and Lucid returns to her rest with good memories this time.

Image

Except Lucid also knows it's a dream, and knows what they're doing. So she's trying not to let them know she knows, while they don't let her know they know, and it's all an elaborate dance that's so very, very heartrending if you think about it for more than a minute.

This event would hit if anyone in MapleStory bothered to read event dialogue, basically.

In conclusion, Lucid is the best-written villain in the entire Arcane River, and it's not particularly close.

But I know what you're thinking: "Gee, TeeQueue, that's an incredibly large amount of information out of nowhere about a sympathetic anti-villain. I don't see how it has anything to do with our plucky magical girl idol, though."

Image

And that's because you didn't let me finish, because it always comes back to magical girl idols.

You see, while in her dream Lucid decided to abuse her power over everything to create a Dream Angelic Buster to hold an impromptu idol duet concert with her. As a consummate professional, even as a figment of someone's imagination she's willing to drop everything if it's to make her fans happy. This leads us to ABxLucid, which is not implemented in v251.

—That's not an error, it's because it's slated for v252, don't worry about it for now, we'll get to it at the very end of everything. I promise.

All of that is to say, we beat Lucid so hard that she became a fan. Goodnight, everybody!

I play this game as a joke.

Image

Image Never stop until the world fades away~!

Image Wow… that was your 23rd encore. They're really eating it up out there, Tear.

Image Well… I thought that since I'd be moving on soon, I should hold a concert. The Erdas here can feel things like happiness or sadness after all, you know?

Image And they can also grant honor!

Image Well, there's that too… but I just want to make people smile!

Image Image Image Image ONE MORE SONG! ONE MORE SONG!

Image Alright, alright, I hear you. Fine, but I really have to get going after this! Here goes~!

While Magilia is busy with. That. There's a little more to mention about the Dreamer event: In GMS it was a summer event, while in KMS it was actually a winter event. This means that Lucid has two different outfits based on where you were playing!

I really like the sleeves on this outfit. There is no ABxLucid art of it, because ABxLucid was not run in KMS—their Angelic Buster remaster and DREAMER updates were two separate things, meaning no overlap was possible.

Image

Moving on to the meat of the update, the first thing I do is check on the AF requirement for the next area. The highest level parts of it have a requirement of 360 to break even on the opponents.

Image

As a reminder, we have 340 AF. It's time to pull something out of nowhere to trivialize this minor gap that wouldn't really cause problems in the first place.

Image

It's time for Arcane Symbol Selector coupons. ASS coupons allow us to select any symbol we currently have, and get one symbol per coupon for them for that symbol. In present day MapleStory we can merge them directly into the Symbol with no middleman.

Image

This is not implemented in v251, meaning that I have to use these coupons in stacks of up to 48, the number of open slots in my Equipment menu.

I am carrying over 1500 of these things.

I can only use them 48 at a time.

ASS coupons, indeed.

Image

I burn a handful of them to get us to a comfy 400AF. Hitting 560 for the functional invincibility in all of the next area and 1.5x damage would be nice, but we don't need it.

Image Fingers were cramping from all the clicks, huh?

Oh, looks like Magilia's done singing. Let's move on.

Image

The next area is named Arcana, and we can access it by clicking the lightbulb over Magilia's head any time after we hit 225.

Image (Lucid's red fog has not yet dissipated. It looks like it will be some time before the city is completely free.)

Image ...What‘s that sound? (I should follow the sound and see what it‘s coming from.)

Image
Image Huh? That sound... I've heard it before.

Image

It's Flying Fish! The hero of Arcane River, back once again!

Image

Magilia is all too happy to see them again.

Image

Time to ride it down the river. The red fog is gone where it's traveling. Trust in the Fish. The Fish knows the way.

Image

Image Goodbye, Lachelein. Maybe I'll see you again!

The Arcane River is the sort of place where rivers can just. Go up sometimes. It's fine.

Image

And we go up… and up… and up…

Image
Image Woahl What's that huge vortex?

Image

It is indeed huge, big enough to be seen even offscreen.

Image Well… we can't just go back. Go around it, Flying Fish!

Image

We are unsuccessful.

Image

Astoundingly unsuccessful. Farewell, Flying Fish, true hero of MapleStory. :sadwave:

Image

If you are watching this video, please note that only the first 15 seconds of it play. This is the only copy of it I can find anywhere online, and it has the second cutscene appended at the end.

Related: there is a second cutscene.

Image
Image Where... Where am I?

Image

Image There was a vortex… and it brought me over here…

Image You okay?

Image Just a horrible backache.

Image
Image This place sure is quiet. I don't even hear birds in the distance.

Image Maybe it's empty..?

Image
Image What are these motes of light?

Image It's a path… I guess I should follow it?

Image Eh, good idea as any.

Image
Image Huh. The trail ends here. What were those lights?

Image Hey, what's that? Just offscreen!

Image

We approach a sad… something. It is crying, so we approach.

Image
Image The Spirit Tree... It's crying…

The sprites for the spirits are very incompatible with Photoshop so they look kind of bad.

This one thing cannot be blamed on MapleStory.

Image (Sniffs) Spirit Tree, don't get sick. Please return to normal soon…

Image
Image The forest was so beautiful... (Sniffs) Why did this have to happen?

Image Everything's going wrong, the spirits are out of control… I'm scared..!

Image (What's he talking about..?)

Image Hey there…

Image Wahh!!

Image I'm not here to hurt you, I'm just trying to get answers.

Image No… behind you!

Image

Image Ahh man… I hate it when they come from offscreen.

Image Aaaaa…!

Image Let's do this! You ready?!

And so Arcana begins. We've got a giant tree, a mysterious problem, a sad spirit, and a bunch of enemies breathing down our throat.

Next time, we'll find out how this leads into us beating up a handful of every single mob in the area.

User avatar
Previously, on Maplegical Girl Site β:

Image

Evil spirits.

And now: Violence.

Image
Image Feel it in your heart!

It doesn't take us long at all to take down the half-dozen spirits.

Total Kills: 11,113

Image

Image Waah… Waah..!

Image Wow he's… really going.

Image Yeah… we should wait for him to stop crying, first.

Image Ahh… We're… okay? …How did you get here? Who are you?

Image I'm Angelic Buster Magilia! I got dragged here by a whirling vortex of light.

Image Huuh… That's strange. Maybe it's related to what's happened here.

Image Something happened?

Image Yeah… this place used to be full of life. Just thinking about it makes me sad.

Image
Image That tree you see in the distance used to resonate with the song of a harmonious forest, and blossomed with beautiful flowers. We would stroll beneath the Spirit Tree's branches.

Image
Image The Spirit Tree sheltered us from danger, and the places where its petals fell overflowed with life.

Image
Image ...But the song of the forest grew silent, and tragedy came down on us.

Image The forest started to die, and wild, discordant spirits appeared. The Spirit Tree began to wither as well…

Image
Image As it did, this evil stench began to shroud it.

Image It was after that the Vortex of Light appeared. It must be connected to the Tree's condition.

Image Meaning if we want to go further, we'll have to fix that tree. And it happened once the song stopped playing?

Image Mmhm.

Image Tell me more about the Song of the Forest.

Image There are plants called songblooms that grow through the forest and make beautiful sounds. Those sounds harmonizing through the whole forest are what make the Song of the Forest… but one day they just fell silent all at once. I've tried everything to restore them… but nothing worked. I'm… tired. And the Spirit Tree is still in such pain…

Image Woof… heavy.

Image Alright then. So we have to restore the songblooms! If it's music you need, Angelic Buster's on the scene! How can I help?

Image
Image I believe the Spirit Tree could restore itself, if only the Song of the Forest could play again. I tried to revive the Songblooms, but…

Image …Waaaaah..!!

Image Do you need a minute?

Image I'm… I'm sorry… (sniffle) I'm such a crybaby…

Image
Image It can be felt, but not seen. You cannot hear it, but you know it is there. What is it?

Once again, trying to turn these big icons with a bunch of floaty particle effects into an icon utterly ruins them. Still not MapleStory's fault, but it seems we'll be having to deal with this for the whole of Arcana.

Image Friendship, love, and kindness. Your tale tugs at my heart, like the breeze on one's tendrils. Very well, I will assist you.

Image Oh… that's the Wind Spirit! He's a bit unusual.

Image My song is mine alone, but you may sing it.

Image Uh-huh… Well, will you help us restore the Songblooms and restart the Song of the Forest?

Image If we do, we might be able to fix everything! What do you say?

Image Hahaha, you have my assistance. Just tell me what to do! I wait with bated breath. Ah! An urgent quest. I pulsate with excitement.

Image Now, speak speak! Tell to me your quest!

Image Can you carry us down the cliff to where the Floral Flute is?

Image Dooot~ The flute below the cliff. the floral flute that toots. Dooooooot~ Yes, we'll ride the wind. zoomy and free. Down, down, to the flute that toots. Ready?

Wind Spirit is my favorite spirit. :3:

Anyways, this is a quest marker and we accept it.

Image

We spend the next few seconds falling down a map while the Wind Spirit helps the Small Spirit get down safely.

Image Uh… You can land from up here, right?

Image It's okay. All this dance practice has made my calves really strong!

Image Okay, but what about your knees?

Image You know, I always thought landing was kind of a shins-and-below thing.

Image Uh… Well, good luck, Angelic Buster.

Image

Image Woosh woosh… did you land well from the breeze's blow?

Image I… ohh… geez, that was rougher than I thought.

Image The knees?

Image I felt it in my spine.

Image Down a Power Elixir, you'll be fine.

Image Flying on the winds brings great joy… Hehee, woosh woosh~~

Image

Image So the Wind Spirit left… I never know what he's thinking.

Image Speaking of thinking… what're you thinking we should do?

Image Well… we'll need to collect life force from the spirits around here to revive the flute.

Image Hunting? Leave it to me! I LOVE HUNTING!

Image

Image In that case, can you please get me 10 of the essences of the three Spirits around here?

Image On it!

We will be fighting Water, Sun and Earth spirits for the first main quest of this area.

Image

Thankfully, these items drop somewhat regularly from the mobs in question…

Image

So we're able to get the Water and Sun spirits pretty quickly.

Total Kills: 11,296

Image

Earth, however, gives us a problem: The Earth Spirit map happens to be one of the most convenient training spots for players in the 230s or so, and this means there are a number of other people around. This brings us to Map Sharing etiquette!

It's considered incredibly gauche to show up on a map where someone else is and start killing enemies, with the exception of "Newbies in Vanishing Journey trying to do dailies before they have the power to 1-2 shot mobs" (which is usually fine if you ask the other party first) and "Newbies trying to get their 1 kill for the first symbol" (which doesn't even require you to ask, everyone remembers how annoying that is the first time).

This brings us to the generally agreed-upon rule: "If someone is already on the map killing things, don't kill things." Because someone is here, we get to change channels to another one of the 40 Kronos channels, in hope of finding an empty map.

Image

And then we change channels again.

Image

And again.

Image

And again. Each of these has a 2-3 second black screen as the channel change goes through.

Image

And another…

Image

Oh, two people on this one. That's unusual! Next.

Image

Another held map. We continue on!

Image

…How did a Hayato get up there..?

Image What's a Hayato?

6% Crit Damage. Keep moving.

Image

Even when I can't immediately see other Maplers, I can see their damage skins from hitting the enemies. Most players use the Unit-type skins (which put a K/M/B at the end of the damage number) to help ballpark their damage better. Full numeric damage skins are more rarely used, and while there are damage skins that don't show any numbers at all, only the truly deranged ever use them.

Image

…I have a Kanna that uses the XOXO damage skin, because I am truly deranged.

Anyways, next.

Image

Once again we need to change channels. This is still pretty normal: with any event that encourages making a new character, early maps will get very full for the first few days.

Next!

Image

There we go. That floating blue orb is the AFK mob for this area, so it being here means other people aren't. It's time to get to work.

Image Hunting time!

Image

Total Kills: 11,406

It takes us less time to get the Essences than it took us to find the channel.

Image All done? Let's head back to the Small Spirit and fix that plant.

Image Right! Let's go!

Image

Image Ah! You have the essences! Let me just put them on the flowers and we'll see if that does the trick…

Image You're not sure?

Image I'm pretty sure!

(The Floral Flute appeared briefly revitalized. but quickly returned to its withered state.)

Image (sniff) Why… why didn't it work..! Maybe we need some more?

Image More hunting! Got it. How many then… Twenty? Thirty of each?

Image

Image I was thinking 100!

Image A HUNDRED?!

Image …This… may take me a minute.

User avatar
Image

Image All… done..!

Total Kills: 12,133

Image Huh. That felt pretty fast, actually.

That's because I used a cut to skip the actual killing. It took nearly 1k mobs to get all the things, all told.

Image And that explains why my EXP jumped up! Neat.

Image You brought the stuff? I'll get to work right away. This'll work… it has to work.

(It doesn't.)

Image It… didn't work?

Image
Image What if… the Floral Flute can never be revived? (Sniffs) Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhh!

Image
Image I heard your cry on the wind. and wooshed over. What is the matter? Will the flute still not toot?

Image Exactly! There's no flute tootin' here at all! It's becoming a real problem.

Image Hmm… A flute toot that's kaput! Ah, I know! I heard a whisper on the wind from a pretty pink flower. I Know not what was said, nor who made the call. Twas important I'd wager… but I don't recall.

Image (That... largely unhelpful soliloquy suggested one of the Whispering Flowers might know something. But there's no way of telling which one.)

Image

Our next quest is to talk to these conspicuous pink flowers that have been on every map we've seen so far.

Image
If nothing is done. all will wither and die. Me, you, everyone.
-Pessimistic Spirit

I do not know how the flower manages to properly cite its source, so please do not ask me.

Image Cite… source? What's that?

Image Don't worry about it, it only matters if your song sounds even remotely like anything any popular artist has released in the last thirty years, or also unpopular artists, or maybe if one measure is the same but it's a catchy hook someone thinks they made once.

Image …Right, let's go looking for something else.

Image
The Floral Flute's all shriveled up. Do you think it will ever stand tall under the moonlight again? Will the song of the forest ever return? Someone's coming… Hurry, hide!

Image …Not this one. I hope they're okay, though.

Image
Everything in this forest will one day wither and die...

Image Huh… How existential.

Image I guess you won't wither, will you?

Image Maybe if I don't eat stones for long enough… but I'm not interested in finding out.

Image
The Floral Flute thrives on moonlight. The most moonlight falls on the highest place in the forest.
-Passing Spirit

Image …This is it! We found it!

Image Great job, Angelic Buster!

Time to head back to the Small Spirit and deliver the good news!

Image

Image Small Spirit, Small Spirit! I figured out the answer!

Image What? You did?

Image Yeah! We need moonlight!

Image Oh… yeah, come to think of it the flute used to be BATHED in moonlight. Then maybe… Alright! Let's transport it to where it can get the most moonlight. Except it's too big to move right now…

Image Let's cut a trimming of the Floral Flute and plant it in the moonlit spot!

Image
Image Let's cut a trimming from the Floral Flute! Just walk over there and mash the Interact/Harvest key.

Image Plant, plant. Transplant the plant! The flute will toot beneath the moon~

Image

We take the clipping and get moving. Time to bring it somewhere high up to catch some moonbeams.

Image

That place is actually about ten feet to the right. Seriously, I drew little arrows on the minimap between where we were and where we are. This was the entire issue.

Image
Image Okay! The cutting is planted. Now it's all up to the moon... Please flute, grow! Please…

Image

There's a brilliant flash…

Image
Image *gasp*

And it's just that easy. We've fixed the Floral Flute. :toot:

Image (Sobs) The Floral Flute… It's been revitalized! The moonlight did the trick.

Image Neither sun nor light of stars will do~ Only the moon can make you bloom~

Image What a beautiful sound! What a relief... Then there's still hope.

Image
Image Hahaha! I feel like back in the good old days. (Giggles) Say, do you think there have been any changes to the Spirit Tree? I want to go see! Hey, Wind Spirit! Take us to the Spirit Tree!

Image Yes, yes! Faster than wind, lighter than air! Wooosh, woosh! Away we fly~

And one scene transition later…

Image
Image We're here. And now, I vanish as I appear, just like the wind!

Image Never fear~ Whenever you need help, I will be near~

Image

Image There he goes… as mysterious as ever.

Image That's the Wind Spirit for you.

Image
Image Oh well. Let's check on the Spirit Tree.

Given that it is still dark purple and gray, it is not doing well.

Image (Sniffs) The Floral Flute was restored, but nothing's changed. Hold on a little longer, Spirit Tree. We'll restore you. Don't give up!

Image Yeah… it's too early to say it's over yet!

Image Right. This is just the start!

Image

This drops us into the main hub area of Arcana, the Spirit Tree. here we have a merchant and a storage keeper to help us if we need them, and this area will slowly get more NPCs as we go.

Image Alright, let's go looking for the next Songbloom! It should be at the heart of the forest. Let's go!

Image Okay. Lead the way! I'll protect you.

Image

Leaving through the portal on the far right, we're dropped into a cutscene as we head deeper into the forest.

Image
Image (It's that trail of light again... The light led you to the Small Spirit, maybe it can help you find the Tree Spirits too?)

We follow the mysterious lights once again.

Image
Image Err... The trail of light splits here. What do you want to do?

Image Looks like we have to split up? I'll take the upper path.

Image Then I'll take the lower. If you find the Tree Spirits, meet me back here.

Image Sure thing!

Image
Image (There are no Tree Spirits here. You should head back.)

Image ...Ugh (Something is sapping your strength.)

Image

Image I can't believe… the lights would betray me..!

Image Angelic Buster..? Tear, what's wrong?!

Image Can't… move…

Image

Image Ah… This isn't good.
